The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), representing U.S. leadership in semiconductor manufacturing, design, and research, today announced worldwide sales of semiconductors reached $37.6 billion for the month of January 2018, an increase of 22.7% compared to the January 2017 total of $30.6 billion. Global sales in January were 1.0% lower than the December 2017 total of $38.0 billion, reflecting normal seasonal market trends. All monthly sales numbers are compiled by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization and represent a three-month moving average.
“After notching its highest-ever annual sales in 2017, the global semiconductor industry is off to a strong and promising start to 2018, posting its highest-ever January sales and 18th consecutive month of year-to-year sales increases,” said John Neuffer, president and CEO, Semiconductor Industry Association. “All major regional markets saw double-digit growth compared to last year, with the Americas leading the away with year-to-year growth of more than 40%. With year-to-year sales also up across all major semiconductor product categories, the global market is well-positioned for a strong start to 2018.”
Year-to-year sales increased substantially across all regions: the Americas (40.6%), Europe (19.9%), Asia Pacific/All Other (18.6%), China, (18.3%), and Japan (15.1%). Month-to-month sales increased slightly in Europe (0.9%), held flat in China, but fell somewhat in Asia Pacific/All Other (-0.6%), Japan (-1.0%), and the Americas (-3.6%).
About SIA
The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) is the voice of the U.S. semiconductor industry, one of America's top export industries and a key driver of America’s economic strength, national security, and global competitiveness. Semiconductors – microchips that control all modern electronics – enable the systems and products we use to work, communicate, travel, entertain, harness energy, treat illness, and make new scientific discoveries. The semiconductor industry directly employs nearly a quarter of a million people in the U.S. In 2017, U.S. semiconductor company sales totaled $189 billion, and semiconductors make the global trillion-dollar electronics industry possible. SIA seeks to strengthen U.S. leadership of semiconductor manufacturing, design, and research by working with Congress, the Administration and other key industry stakeholders to encourage policies and regulations that fuel innovation, propel business and drive international competition.
