VJ Electronix: In Memory of Harold Hyman
May 6, 2019 | VJ ElectronixEstimated reading time: 1 minute

For many in the electronics industry, Harold Hyman was a colleague, a mentor and, above all, a friend. He approached life and work with enthusiasm and a positive outlook. He was always willing to lend a hand and share his wisdom.
Harold passed away on March 25, 2019 at the age of 91. Born in London in 1927, he grew up in the Ponders End district of Enfield, London. Harold earned his degree from Sir John Cass Technical Institute and served in the Royal Air Force from 1945 to 1948.
A metallurgist, Harold began his career in the semiconductor industry. He transitioned from engineering to sales and moved into the electronics industry when he joined Alpha Metals in 1963. Responsible for international sales, Harold lived in England, Italy and Germany, eventually moving to the US in 1974.
Harold continued his career in electronics with HTC (Vapor Phase Reflow), Dynapert, SRT and VJ Electronix. A noted expert in the field, he often wrote for the trade press, published several white papers, and chaired technical sessions at industry conferences. In 2006, Harold retired—though he never completely retired. He continued to work as a consultant and often visited his counterparts at VJE to lend a hand and provide advice.
In 1970, while living in Italy, Harold met Susanne Vanderveldt from Long Island, NY. A year later they were married. Harold and Sue had three boys, Mark, Alexander and David. Harold lived in Acton, MA for 40 years, dedicating his life to family, while enjoying art, music, foreign languages and amateur radio. He was always passionate about his work.
Harold left a lasting impression on many. On Valentine’s day many years ago, when asked if he was going to bring Sue some flowers or candy, he replied, “I don’t need a calendar to remind me how special she is. I try to show her on a daily basis.”
Whether it is advice about how to improve soldering, suggestions to deal with a difficult business situation, or choosing a restaurant, Harold was always helping. He has touched so many lives and will be greatly missed
