More than a decade ago, I stood in front of an IPC APEX EXPO Design Forum audience and talked about something that was becoming more important in electronics design: successful communication with an international engineering team. In my previous column in I-Connect007 Magazine, I shared the example of the U.S. men’s 4x100-meter relay team at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Trayvon Bromell, Fred Kerley, Ronnie Baker, and Cravon Gillespie were among the fastest sprinters in the world. Reaching the final seemed almost certain. Instead, they finished sixth in their qualifying heat and missed advancing by only two-hundredths of a second. The problem was not speed, experience, or talent. It occurred during the baton exchange. Their failure demonstrated that being exceptional at an individual role does not guarantee collective success. A race can be lost not during the individual legs, but during the brief moments when responsibility changes hands.

At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the U.S. men’s 4x100-meter relay team of Trayvon Bromell, Fred Kerley, Ronnie Baker, and Cravon Gillespie was expected to contend for gold. With some of the fastest sprinters in the world, simply reaching the final seemed almost certain. Instead, the heavily favored team finished sixth in its qualifying heat and failed to advance, missing the final by just two-hundredths of a second. This massive disappointment was not due to a lack of individual speed but to a poorly executed baton exchange between Kerley and Baker, which forced both runners to slow down at the most critical moment.
