Inmarsat, alongside partners Cobham Satcom and Globalsat Group, has won two Railway Technology Excellence Awards. The accolades reward our excellence in the Product Launch and Operations categories for our Rail Telemetry and Communications Solution.
Offering real-time data transfer and push-to-talk (PTT) communications for rail operators working in remote areas, the solution connects drivers and railway staff wherever they are, helping drive operational efficiencies and boosting overall railway safety.
The award-winning connectivity solution was implemented by Globalsat Group via Cobham Satcom terminals utilising our ELERA L-band network to access uninterrupted, high-quality connectivity facilitating the transfer of telematics, voice and video data. This allows accurate real-time tracking of each train and communication between drivers, maintenance staff and regional control centres. The locomotive data is visualised in an application which depicts the entire railway network and the position and speed of each vehicle.
Steven Tompkins, Director of Market Development at Inmarsat Enterprise, said: We’re thrilled our solution, which provides real-time data access and voice communications between driver and operations control centre, as well as real-time tracking, has been recognised in two separate categories of the Railway Technology Excellence Awards. The beauty of this solution is that satellite connectivity eliminates the need to install a fibre network, saving customers substantial infrastructure investment. It also enables rail operators to safely add more locomotives to their rail network, because they know exactly where each one is and how fast it’s travelling.”
Igor Falcão, Senior Vice President of Sales at Globalsat Group, commenting on the award-winning collaboration, said: “This award is a great validation of our efforts to be at the forefront of the latest innovations in the rail industry. In bringing together Cobham Satcom’s high-performance terminals and Inmarsat’s industry-leading satellite network designed for IoT, our clients to gain access to the latest and best available technology for real-time data collection and analysis.”
Henrik Nørrelykke, Vice President Critical Communications, Cobham Satcom, commented: “We’re very proud to be leading the way in rail telemetry solutions as part of a very successful collaboration with Inmarsat and Globalsat Group. These awards acknowledge how real-time data transfer and PTT communications are helping the rail industry address its key safety and efficiency challenges thanks to managed IoT services connected over Inmarsat’s reliable and secure ELERA network.”

Nolan’s Notes: Coming to Terms With AI
05/07/2024 | Nolan Johnson -- Column: Nolan's NotesHow fast do things move in the world of data analytics? Here’s an example. We’ve been planning this issue on artificial intelligence for the past few months, and, in fact, I had already written this column about a month ago. Then I went to IPC APEX EXPO and upended it all. I originally had compared AI to drag racing in that (CPU) horsepower and new (data) vehicles have steadily delivered higher performance competition. That seemed pretty accurate given how generative AI models dominated the popular media with amazing results—and sometimes spectacular crashes.
