Indium President to Deliver TestConX Keynote on Materials Science Innovations
April 7, 2022 | Indium CorporationEstimated reading time: 3 minutes
Indium Corporation’s Ross Berntson, President and COO, will deliver the keynote presentation at TestConX, to be held May 1-4, in Mesa, Arizona, US.
Berntson will be presenting on Monday, May 2 at 9 a.m.
Humans began their metallurgical journey in approximately 10,000 BC with the copper age and shortly thereafter learned how to produce the first solder interconnects after which, despite enormous gains elsewhere in the material world, humans were distracted and innovation paused. Solder stayed solder and joints would be largely recognizable to our Egyptian and Sumerian ancestors. While the conversion to Pb-free solder might be viewed as a notable detour, the lack of imagination created a consensus around SnAgCu alloys that were largely based on mimicking the performance of their SnPb predecessors. Perhaps our researchers were enthralled by the polymer age and that novel adhesives, underfills, and encapsulants could solve all our assembly problems. This approach is now failing. In Metallurgy: The Renewed Fulcrum of Innovation, Berntson will examine how metallurgists today are liberated to explore the periodic table and the unique properties of metals to create solutions for the demanding electronics assembly industry. The solutions included enhanced reliability, reduced carbon footprints, increased thermal performance, and rapid assembly and prototyping. Berntson will discuss how together companies can keep the innovations flowing and enable materials science to change the world yet again.
Berntson believes the best driver of innovation is a shared vision and work environment where employee ingenuity and creativity can flourish. As president and chief operating officer for Indium Corporation, Ross oversees global sales, marketing, technical support, operations, engineering, human resources, and product R&D.
He sees each individual as playing an integral role in the company’s future, and seeks to help employees define and achieve their full potential. With enthusiasm, he encourages teammates to turn uncertainty into opportunity.
With a career path in science, technology, and business management, his trajectory at Indium Corporation began in 1996 as a product specialist. He quickly rose to product manager, followed by marketing leader, sales leader, and tech support leader. Most recently, he served as executive vice president and president of Indium Corporation’s Asia Holdings. This role included living in Singapore for two years, learning much about the culture and regional business needs and opportunities in Southeast Asia and China.
Berntson applies his expertise in materials science and technology to exploration of new niche markets and applications trends. Strategic expansion into numerous and diverse markets has also added to Indium Corporation’s stability and strength. He is a strong proponent of the company’s core belief that materials science changes the world—that almost every great advancement in technology can be attributed to a breakthrough in materials science.
In support of this, the company’s sales, technical, R&D, and support teams are committed to collaborating with customers on the challenges facing our industry and supporting customer product innovation. One of his high priorities has been investments in new tools and systems that anticipate the ever-increasing demands for electronics and semiconductor equipment. This includes a corporate commitment to support continuing growth in automotive electronics and autonomous vehicles through development of superior materials for increasingly powerful processors.
Berntson is an active member of numerous industry organizations, including IPC, iNEMI, International Microelectronics Assembly and Packaging Society, and the Surface Mount Technology Association. He also is an accomplished author and has presented at technical conferences globally. He holds a master’s degree in business administration, a master of arts degree in education, and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Cornell University, where he earned the Henny Wittink Memorial Marketing Prize and the George C. Caldwell Prize.

Connect the Dots: Designing for Reality—The Pre-Manufacturing Process
05/08/2024 | Matt Stevenson -- Column: Connect the DotsI have been working with Nolan Johnson on a podcast series about designing PCBs for the reality of manufacturing. By sharing lessons learned over a long career in the PCB industry, we hope to shorten learning curves and help designers produce better boards with less hassle and rework. Episode 2 deals with the electronic pre-manufacturing process. Moving from CAD (computer-aided design) to CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) is a key step in PCB manufacturing. CAM turns digital designs into instructions that machines can use to actually build the PCB.
