VDL Groep Strengthens Position in Electronics with Rena Acquisition
December 7, 2023 | VDL GroepEstimated reading time: 1 minute
VDL Groep has strengthened its position in the high-quality electronics market. The industrial family business with its head office in Eindhoven has acquired Rena Electronica from Zundert. Rena Electronica develops and produces electronics, among others for LED products, in different markets. As a result of this acquisition, VDL particularly sees synergy benefits with VDL TBP Electronics, the subsidiary based in Dirksland and Eindhoven, which specialises in the assembly of high-quality electronics, so-called printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs), circuit boards with electronic components.
Room for further growth
Rena Electronica has a turnover of 12 million euros and over 50 employees. The company has invested in capacity expansion over the past years and has room for further growth. Due to lack of available capacity, VDL TBP Electronics, with over 170 employees and an annual turnover of 50 million euros, is approaching the limits of growth. The addition of Rena's craftsmanship and high-quality machines will boost VDL's production capacity in the field of high-quality electronics, thus achieving the desired capacity expansion and enabling VDL to continue providing clients with good services in this time of market growth. Developments such as electrification, geopolitical developments (strategic autonomy) and the ‘Internet of Things’ mean that market demand for high-quality electronics is expected to continue rising.
'Expand production capacity'
President & CEO of VDL Groep Willem van der Leegte: ‘Our ambition is to be a one-stop-shop industrial partner. Besides our competencies in the field of mechanics and software, with VDL TBP Electronics in our ranks, we have taken a big step forward in the field of electronics. With Rena Electronica's skilled employees and the high-quality machines, we are further expanding our production capacity, enabling us to better fulfil the increasing demands of our clients."
‘Added value’
“By becoming part of VDL Groep we will be able to grow further in added value innovative solutions together”, says Jochem Winkelman, general manager of Rena Electronica. “This acquisition ensures long term continuity for our clients and employees.”

Nolan’s Notes: Is Mexico the Pulse of Electronics in the Americas?
11/04/2025 | Nolan Johnson -- Column: Nolan's NotesLast year, I attended SMTA Guadalajara, where I saw the results of the Mexican investment in electronics manufacturing. The U.S. was still operating under the Biden administration, and while Mexican EMS companies had expanded capacity to support EV manufacturing, the demand dropped significantly. In my conversations at the show, the sentiment was one of patience. They knew the EV business would likely come back. However, they didn’t expect an overhaul of U.S. trade agreements and tariffs that would shift a more diversified portfolio in Mexico’s direction.
