Beyond the Rulebook
What happens when the rule book is no longer useful, or worse, was never written in the first place? In today’s fast-moving electronics landscape, we’re increasingly asked to design and build what has no precedent, no proven path, and no tidy checklist to follow. This is where “Design for Invention” begins.
March Madness
From the growing role of AI in design tools to the challenge of managing cumulative tolerances, these articles in this issue examine the technical details, design choices, and manufacturing considerations that determine whether a board works as intended.

Beyond Blueprints: Early Involvement Shapes Superior Fab Outcomes
January 11, 2024 | Lea Maurel, ICAPE GroupEstimated reading time: 1 minute
PCB fabrication is the cornerstone of innovation in electronics, transforming intricate circuit designs into crucial PCBs. As technology advances, the demand for reliable PCBs with ever-increasing circuit density surges and highlights the pivotal role of fabrication in shaping the electronics landscape. In this intricate dance between innovation and execution, a symbiotic relationship emerges between designers and fabricators. This forms the core of success.
Effective communication acts as the bridge between design ideation and manufacturing realization, emphasizing the need for a collaborative approach. The essence lies in early involvement, where fabricators contribute knowledge from the design's nascent stages, ensuring a seamless transition to functional PCBs. Subsequent exploration will delve into harnessing this symbiotic relationship at key stages, reaping tangible benefits in PCB fabrication.
Early Involvement of Fabricators
Collaboration in Floorplanning
In the intricate dance of PCB fabrication, the initial floorplanning stage emerges as a crucial arena where the collaboration between designers and fabricators sets the stage for success. This collaborative approach brings forth many advantages to shape the trajectory of the entire fabrication process.
First, involving fabricators in floorplanning bridges design intent and manufacturability. Fabricators bring practical insights into the materials and processes that will be employed during manufacturing. This collaboration ensures that the floorplan not only aligns with the functional requirements but also optimizes the placement of components for enhanced manufacturability.
One notable advantage is optimizing component placement for both performance and manufacturability. By integrating the expertise of fabricators, designers can strategically position components to minimize trace lengths. This reduction in trace lengths enhances signal integrity and streamlines the routing process during layout. The result is a PCB that meets design specifications in a manner that is inherently easier and more efficient to fabricate.

April Issue of I-Connect007 Magazine: Beyond the Rulebook
04/14/2026 | I-Connect007 Editorial TeamIn this month’s I-Connect007 Magazine, we asked PCB designers, fabricators, and suppliers what it really means to operate without a rulebook. Their perspectives vary, especially between seasoned designers and experienced fabricators, but a common thread emerges: progress depends on pushing boundaries and finding a way forward, even when the path isn’t clear. In many ways, this mindset has always been part of what we do, whether we’ve called it that or not.
Standard of Excellence: Engineering Is the New Sales—How Technical Collaboration Wins Business
04/15/2026 | Anaya Vardya -- Column: Standard of ExcellenceWhen it comes to complex, high-performance electronics, the line between sales and engineering has all but disappeared. Customers want more than a quote. They’re not simply buying boards; they’re buying understanding, so engineering is now the front line of customer trust, problem-solving, and long-term success. There was a time when sales meant persuasion, and engineering meant production. Today, the two are inseparable.
Companion Guide to Popular UHDI Podcast Series Now Available for Download
03/23/2026 | I-Connect007The companion guide to On the Line With…American Standard Circuits: Ultra High Density Interconnect (UHDI) explores how UHDI is reshaping PCB design and manufacturing. As trace widths shrink from 25 microns toward 5 microns, UHDI enables finer geometries, tighter impedance control, improved RF performance, and reduced layer counts.
Standard of Excellence: Building the Board of the Future—Materials, Methods, and Mindset
02/18/2026 | Anaya Vardya -- Column: Standard of ExcellenceThe future of PCB manufacturing is here. The products we’re being asked to build today would have been called “advanced” just a few years ago. What was once special is now standard, and what was once impossible is now expected. The challenge and the opportunity lie in leading the charge to the next frontier of printed circuit board design, materials, and manufacturing discipline. To build the board of the future, we need new materials, smarter methods, and a mindset of innovation anchored in flawless execution.
What's Next in PCB Fabrication?
