The real cost to manufacture a PCB encompasses everything that goes into making the product: the materials and other value-added supplies, machine and personnel costs, and most importantly, your quality. A hard look at real costs seems wholly appropriate.
Alternate Metallization Processes
Traditional electroless copper and electroless copper immersion gold have been primary PCB plating methods for decades. But alternative plating metals and processes have been introduced over the past few years as miniaturization and advanced packaging continue to develop.

Young Expert 'Cleanroom Ralph' Explains Microelectronics for AT&S
October 17, 2024 | AT&SEstimated reading time: 1 minute
“Word has gotten around that high-performance microchips are an important cornerstone of the modern economy. However, very few people know how the technology actually works and what contribution Austria makes to its creation. Our new information campaign explains the basics in a child-friendly way – with a new bilingual website for children and short videos by our junior expert Ralph,” says Gerald Reischl, Vice President Corporate Communications at AT&S.
AT&S, the global microelectronics company based in Styria, is launching a smart new information campaign with “Cleanroom Ralph”, the country’s youngest technology expert. In several short, easy-to-understand videos, seven-year-old Ralph from Styria explains the most important concepts from the world of microelectronics.
Ralph reports directly from the AT&S production facilities in his cleanroom suit and his explanations provide an incentive to find out more about this multifaceted branch of industry. Ralph is not only an expert on printed circuit boards and IC substrates, but also shows off his musical talents as a rapper in the videos to illustrate how impressively small microelectronic components are today. The videos cater to a young audience and are now available online on AT&S’s YouTube Channel.
STEM subjects are fun
In addition to the Cleanroom Ralph videos, AT&S is also presenting a new Kids’ Corner on the company website, which is aimed specifically at inquisitive spirits like Ralph and explains the basics of microelectronics in a child-friendly way. The focus lies on the question “Why does a smartphone have superpowers?”
The information campaign aims to raise awareness and enthusiasm for STEM subjects and emphasizes the importance of the microelectronics industry for the Austrian and European economies. Without efficient interconnect solutions like those created by AT&S, modern cars, smartphones, computers, mobile networks, and internet servers would not be possible.
Key role for Austria
AT&S is one of the few European key players in the global microchip ecosystem and an important driver of the green revolution on the old continent. Anyone who wants to understand how microelectronic systems work, in which devices they can be found and why they play a decisive role in maintaining and expanding European prosperity should make use of AT&S’s new online offerings and listen to Cleanroom Ralph’s presentations.
