Zero Touch Data Package: The Future of Seamless PCB Manufacturing
May 22, 2025 | Dana Korf, Victory Giant TechnologyEstimated reading time: Less than a minute

Imagine a day when a design data file—not a traditional documentation package—is output directly from the eCAD system, transmitted to selected fabricators, and automatically loaded into their engineering/CAM systems, initiating tooling and production without any human intervention. This is zero touch data transfer in action.
By eliminating manual processes, front-end personnel at fabrication facilities can be redeployed to strategic areas such as R&D and customer engagement. Many of these professionals are ideally suited to transition into field application engineer (FAE) roles.
While many components of this vision exist independently today, full implementation remains elusive. Why? The core issue is cultural: the industry has long tolerated defective data packages. Currently, over 95% of manufacturing data packages are based on just three formats: Gerber (and its related documents), ODB++, and IPC-2581. Notably, ODB++ and IPC-2581 do not require the multitude of supplementary documents typically bundled with Gerber-based submissions.

Fresh PCB Concepts: The Pros and Cons of Gerber, ODB++, IPC-2581
06/28/2023 | Team NCAB -- Column: Fresh PCB ConceptsWhich file format should I use? This is something I am asked frequently, and it reminds me of when I was in college and working for a PCB fabricator. I’d work my way to the sales department so I could support them with design for manufacture (DFM) analysis—a daunting task while also trying to remember all the information I was learning in my engineering classes. However, an engineer with many years of experience was a wonderful mentor to me. He not only taught me a plethora of information about PCBs, but he also taught me about the many different file formats we use for PCBs. He even shared painful legends of screen projectors and making screens.
