Kopin Announces $9 Million Follow-On Contract for Defense Thermal Imaging Assembly
August 14, 2025 | BUSINESS WIREEstimated reading time: 1 minute
Kopin Corporation, a leading provider of application-specific optical systems and high-performance microdisplays for defense, training, industrial, consumer and medical products, today announced the award of an approximate $9 million follow-on production contract in support of a custom thermal imaging assembly build for a major U.S. defense prime contractor.
The custom eyepiece module integrates Kopin’s microdisplay, lens and drive electronics within a durable, ruggedized enclosure. As a key component of a detachable man portable thermal weapon system, it enables warfighters to accurately detect enemy targets in harsh and demanding environments – whether day or night – enhancing their combat capabilities. Weapon sights and soldier-borne vision systems equip warfighters with superior capabilities over adversaries, delivering real-time, high-resolution situational intelligence to support rapid and informed decision making and sharper battlefield awareness.
“This follow-on contract further increases our strong backlog of future deliveries,” said Bill Maffucci, SVP, Business Development and Strategy. “The consistent performance of our products has earned the trust and confidence of allied forces around the world. We believe this order reaffirms the proven reliability and mission-readiness of our eyepiece assemblies across critical U.S. and NATO-aligned weapon sight programs. We are proud to provide our defense customers with equipment that meets their requirements and seamlessly integrates with weapon sight sensors to deliver sharp, reliable visuals to the warfighter.”

Defense Speak Interpreted: Hypersonics Report Back After Six Years of Silence
04/07/2026 | Dennis Fritz -- Column: Defense Speak InterpretedIt’s been six years since my Defense Speaks column about hypersonic weapons. Back then, these weapons were the most sought-after technology as there was little defense for them. They were the cornerstone of the “strike any location on earth within one hour” scenario. Of course, the war in Ukraine, and now the action in Iran, have grabbed the weapons headlines, but hypersonics still play a role and development continues. Here is the update.

Defense Speak Interpreted: Weapons—Electrical Power vs. Energetics
12/09/2025 | Dennis Fritz -- Column: Defense Speak InterpretedI have wondered for years if electrical power could compete with gunpowder in defense weapons systems. Think of the advantages: Nothing in your vehicle would explode if enemy gunfire hit you, and there would be no armor to protect your powder magazine. The Accurate Energetic Systems, LLC (AES) explosives facility in Humphreys County, Tennessee, explosives plant that blew up on Oct. 10, was not making ammunition, but it reminded us of the danger of “energetics.” This column explores the aspects of hitting and destroying targets. A future column will explore propellants.
