Current IssueSignal Integrity
If you don’t have signal integrity problems now, you will eventually. This month, our expert contributors share a variety of SI techniques that can help designers avoid ground bounce, crosstalk, parasitic issues, and much more.
Proper Floor Planning
Floor planning decisions can make or break performance, manufacturability, and timelines. This month’s contributors weigh in with their best practices for proper floor planning and specific strategies to get it right.
Showing Some Constraint
A strong design constraint strategy carefully balances a wide range of electrical and manufacturing trade-offs. This month, we explore the key requirements, common challenges, and best practices behind building an effective constraint strategy.

How PCBA Excellence Transforms High-mix Operations
September 22, 2025 | Chintan Sanghani, Electronics Center for ExcellenceEstimated reading time: 1 minute

With over 30 years of manufacturing excellence, our organization has built deep expertise in PCBA contract manufacturing for downhole oilfield tools. Through years of focused operational leadership in this demanding sector, we've learned that in high-mix, low-volume (HMLV) environments, traditional manufacturing approaches can create more bottlenecks than breakthroughs.
With the demanding requirements of high-reliability electronics and the unpredictable nature of oil and gas industry demands, operational excellence requires a fundamentally different approach than conventional high-volume manufacturing. It is an industry where product mix changes constantly, reliability cannot be compromised, and inefficient flow doesn't just impact delivery schedules. It can mean the difference between a successful downhole operation and costly field failures thousands of feet underground:
- 65% reduction in average lead time
- 33% reduction in rework hours
The Challenge: When Traditional Lean Hits HMLV Reality
In HMLV manufacturing, the challenges aren't abstract, but rather daily operational realities that impact every aspect of production. Unlike high-volume environments where Lean methodologies were originally developed, HMLV operations face unique constraints that make traditional approaches ineffective. While the interest and use of Lean tools in HMLV production has increased, adoption often remains partial and adapted rather than holistic.”
The core problems we encountered were systemic: Workforce expansion demands during surge periods created skill gaps, efficiency targets became moving targets due to constant product changeovers, and rework hours consumed valuable capacity that couldn't be easily recovered. Research confirms this challenge. One study noted "the importance of critically assessing the application of LSS within HMLV environments compared to the low-mix high-volume (LMHV) environments where LSS is traditionally successful."
