It’s Only Common Sense: Look Beyond the Tariffs

10/12/2026 | Dan Beaulieu -- Column: It's Only Common Sense
Every time a new tariff is announced, companies start scrambling. You see purchasing managers demanding new quotations, executives ordering their teams to find another country, and suppliers rushing to explain why their prices are changing. Everyone reacts, but the problem is that too few people stop long enough to develop an actual sourcing strategy.

Advanced and Conventional PCBs Do Not Exist in Separate Supply Chains

10/08/2026 | Jan Pedersen, Engineer and PCB Expert
At the NCAB Norway seminar on Sept. 10, I used a familiar example: a standard six-layer PCB. A year earlier, this would generally have been a straightforward purchase. Prototypes could be supplied on quick turn, and production quantities were commonly available within four to six weeks. Choosing standard materials helped secure a competitive price and predictable delivery. We knew what to expect, and we planned accordingly. We were all happy!

Stan Rak’s Road to Reliability Continues

10/07/2026 | Nolan Johnson, SMT007 Magazine
Dr. Stanton Rak spent the better part of this past year taking readers inside the electronic systems that enable electrification through his “Road to Reliability” series, to find out what it takes to make them reliable. Now that the series has concluded, he explains his motives for writing it, his holistic approach to covering EV reliability, and how it can become an important technology driver for high reliability electronics more broadly.

Learning With Leo: The Study of Listening

10/07/2026 | Leo Lambert -- Column: Learning With Leo
For a long time, I thought a consultant was supposed to be the expert in the room. That was my model of the job for years. I can remember wondering how somebody relatively young could know enough to walk into an experienced organization and tell it what it should be doing differently. Four decades later, I have a different answer, and most of what changed my mind has come from the work we do at EPTAC. Between the classroom and the consulting side of the business, I end up in a lot of plants. The companies that call us are rarely short on expertise.

It’s Only Common Sense: When the Cheapest Board Becomes the Most Expensive

10/04/2026 | Dan Beaulieu -- Column: It's Only Common Sense
There is an old saying that price is what you pay, while cost is what you live with, a truism in the PCB industry, where too many companies still purchase PCBs by placing three quotations side by side and automatically choosing the lowest number. On the surface, that looks like responsible purchasing, but was it really a victory?
