Optimizing the Interconnect with Dr. John T.C. Lee

10/21/2026 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007 Magazine
When Dr. John T.C. Lee talks about the evolution of electronics, he keeps coming back to the interconnect. As CEO and President of MKS Inc., he saw growing complexity in the connections between increasingly powerful devices as both a manufacturing challenge and a business opportunity. That thinking helped drive MKS’ acquisition of Atotech in 2022, bringing process chemistry and electroplating together with MKS’ existing strengths in lasers, optics, and precision motion, and giving substance to a strategy the company calls Optimize the Interconnect™. Several years later, AI, advanced packaging, and high-performance computing are putting unprecedented demands on those interconnections

Stop Inspecting AI and Start Understanding

10/20/2026 | Sean Patterson, CrossGen AI
If you are new to a PCB shop, there is a good chance your first real job is at the back end of the line. Maybe you run the AOI station or pull boards at final inspection and flag the ones that do not pass. I want you to notice something: Every board you reject has already been built. The copper was plated and the layers pressed before you ever saw it. Your job is to catch the mistake, not to stop it from happening. That is a problem, but not with you. Unfortunately, it has always been the way most shops go about achieving quality.

The Need for Speed in Mil/Aero Manufacturing

10/20/2026 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007 Magazine
Military and aerospace manufacturers are being asked to move faster, whether developing new drone technologies, responding to supply constraints, or getting new designs from prototype to production. James Hofer of Accurate Circuit Engineering sees that pressure as changing more than just manufacturing schedules. He talks about the growing role of quick-turn PCB fabrication, new relationships between defense primes and startups, and why even long-established approaches to standards and manufacturing have to become more adaptable.

Marcy’s Musings: A Frighteningly Good October Issue

10/19/2026 | Marcy LaRont -- Column: Marcy's Musings
This month, we spotlight MKS, which is expanding its role as an essential supplier to the PCB, assembly, and semiconductor supply chains. In addition to my interview with President and CEO John T.C. Lee, we examine the company’s efforts to develop technologies that bring high-end solutions to real-world manufacturing challenges. Together, they offer a powerful look inside an important industry company. I also want to share some thoughts on my summer travels. I came home from both trips energized and impressed by their enthusiasm, vision, and optimism, and what they have accomplished in a short time.

It’s Only Common Sense: Win the Sale Before the RFQ Arrives

10/18/2026 | Dan Beaulieu -- Column: It's Only Common Sense
There is an old belief in sales that the real competition begins when the request for quotation (RFQ) arrives. That may have been true once, but it is certainly not true today. By the time purchasing sends out an RFQ for a board or electronic assembly, many of the most important decisions about design, materials, production, delivery, and suppliers have already been made. At that point, the salesperson is simply pricing someone else’s solution.
