Beyond the Rulebook
What happens when the rule book is no longer useful, or worse, was never written in the first place? In today’s fast-moving electronics landscape, we’re increasingly asked to design and build what has no precedent, no proven path, and no tidy checklist to follow. This is where “Design for Invention” begins.
March Madness
From the growing role of AI in design tools to the challenge of managing cumulative tolerances, these articles in this issue examine the technical details, design choices, and manufacturing considerations that determine whether a board works as intended.
Looking Forward to APEX EXPO 2026
I-Connect007 Magazine previews APEX EXPO 2026, covering everything from the show floor to the technical conference. For PCB designers, we move past the dreaded auto-router and spotlight AI design tools that actually matter.

CIL Joins EU Project OSYRYS to Bring Hybrid-electric for Regional Flight Closer to Reality
March 24, 2026 | CILEstimated reading time: 2 minutes
What if the future of regional flight was hybrid-electric—and closer than you think? CIL joins a diverse group of 24 EU industrial, research, and academic partners to make it reality.
Safran Electrical & Power lean on project OSYRYS, one of Clean Aviations four flagship projects on regional aviation, officially launched in Brussels this January.
Alongside partners in projects HERACLES, DEMETRA, and PHARES, their shared ambition is clear: deliver the next generation of Ultra-Efficient Regional Aircraft—and cut CO₂ emissions by at least 30%.
Powered by a consortium of 24 industrial and research experts, OSYRYS is at the forefront of electrification. Teams are developing on-board electrical generation and distribution, advanced thermal management, avionics solutions for energy management on board —key enablers for hybrid-electric flight and sustainable regional aviation.
Project OSYRYS brings Europe together, driving disruptive innovation to transform the future of aviation.
The OSYRYS consortia met for joint kick-off meetings, marking the official launch of a five-year collaboration to build the next generation of Ultra-Efficient Regional Aircraft within the Clean Aviation initiative. Led by Safran Electrical & Power, the OSYRYS consortium brings together 24 partners
These meetings marked the beginning of a coordinated effort to accelerate the maturation of key technologies for the next generation of Ultra Efficient Regional aircraft. As this new concept will be key to the decarbonization of regional aviation, the projects will benefit from €140 million in funding from Clean Aviation, the European Union’s leading aviation research and innovation program, complemented by more than €200 million in in-kind contributions.
OSYRYS:
Pioneering electrification and energy efficiency
As emphasized by Jaime Perez De Diego, Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking Project Officer: "OSYRYS is a crucial project for the Regional stream in Clean Aviation, providing paramount power distribution and cooling solutions for the hybrid-electric flight demonstration platform and the next Ultra Efficient Regional Aircraft expected to enter into service in the next decade."
The OSYRYS project plays a key role in developing on-board electrical generation and distribution systems, as well as advanced thermal management and avionics solutions optimized for energy efficiency. OSYRYS innovations are essential for powering and controlling new hybrid-electric architectures, reducing carbon emissions, and supporting the seamless integration of novel propulsion systems.
With their recognized expertise in electrification and energy management, the members of the OSYRYS consortium are driving a critical technological leap towards more sustainable regional aviation. The project sets the groundwork for robust, certifiable solutions that address tomorrow’s operational and environmental challenges. The goal is to push the boundaries of electrification while ensuring safety, performance, and reliability.
