Europe’s electronics industry is navigating major shifts, from AI and automation to workforce challenges, sustainability, and evolving industrial policy. As the Global Electronics Association’s new vice president for Europe, Dominik Grau wants to understand what companies across the region need, and how the Association can help deliver it. I-Connect007 Editor’s Choice: Five Must-Reads for the Week

This week, I was fortunate to attend PCB West in Santa Clara, California, and was reminded of the idyllic weather of that part of California in the early fall. Attendance was high at the weeklong conference and one-day expo, allowing the show to maintain its place as one of the best events for PCB and PCB design. As always, it was great to see old friends and familiar faces. Stay tuned for more PCB West coverage.

The Chemical Connection: Employee and Operator Empowerment in the Age of AI

10/04/2026 | Don Ball -- Column: The Chemical Connection
In an ideal world, every operator would understand the process they are working on and be able to diagnose problems and suggest improvements. In the real world, however, we all know that these types of people are, if not rare, at least in the minority. Where do these people fit in when everyone is turning to automation and AI for quality and yield improvements and cost reduction? (Never lose sight of the fact that, in the end, it’s always about the money.) In my opinion, these people are valuable resources, and every effort should be made to retain them, regardless of their education level or seniority.

I-Connect007 Editor’s Choice: Five Must-Reads for the Week

I recently discovered that the original “Star Trek” debuted in the same month I was born. You can look that up if you want to, but did you know that the series only ran for three years? During that time, however, they produced nearly 30 episodes per season, so there were more than 80 episodes to run through the many years of syndication, as was often the case for me after school: “Brady Bunch” at 4 p.m., “Gilligan’s Island” at 4:30, and then “Star Trek” at 5 p.m. I really tried to be interested in “Star Trek,” but it just felt too corny for me, although I’m not sure how much more “Gilligan’s Island” was rooted in reality.

When the World Becomes Your Design Team

09/24/2026 | Stephen V. Chavez, Siemens EDA and PCEA
More than a decade ago, I stood in front of an IPC APEX EXPO Design Forum audience and talked about something that was becoming more important in electronics design: successful communication with an international engineering team. I had been working with a global PCB design organization that included a talented team in Bangalore, India. However, I was based in Arizona, where there was a 12-hour time difference separating us. With different work schedules, cultures, languages, and communication styles, there were plenty of reasons that could have made collaboration difficult.
