SpaceX and Tesla have announced plans to build Terafab, a large-scale semiconductor manufacturing facility in Grimes County, Texas, aimed at expanding domestic production of advanced logic and memory devices for artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, robotics, and space applications.
According to the companies, Terafab will combine semiconductor fabrication, advanced packaging, and testing in a single vertically integrated campus spanning more than 100 million square feet of planned manufacturing space. The facility is intended to address growing demand for high-performance computing chips used in Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots, autonomous Cybercab platform, and SpaceX's satellite and space-based computing systems.
The announcement follows Tesla's groundbreaking earlier this year on a research fabrication facility at Giga Texas, which the companies describe as a precursor to the larger Terafab project.
SpaceX and Tesla estimate their combined future demand will exceed one terawatt of compute capacity, significantly outpacing today's global supply of advanced AI processors. While the companies said they will continue working with existing semiconductor suppliers, they argue that additional domestic manufacturing capacity is needed to support future AI and aerospace computing requirements.
For the electronics manufacturing industry, the project reflects a broader trend toward vertically integrated semiconductor production. By locating wafer fabrication, advanced packaging, and final test operations on the same campus, manufacturers can reduce logistics complexity, accelerate process improvements, and shorten product development cycles. The increasing importance of advanced packaging—including chiplets, heterogeneous integration, and high-bandwidth memory—has become a key differentiator for next-generation AI devices, making packaging capability as strategically important as wafer fabrication itself.
The initial phase of the project is expected to require approximately $16.8 billion in capital investment from SpaceX and Tesla and create at least 3,000 jobs. The companies said future expansion phases could substantially increase both investment and employment.
The announcement also highlights continuing investment in domestic semiconductor manufacturing following passage of the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act in 2022. Although Terafab has not been announced as a CHIPS Act-funded project, it aligns with broader industry efforts to expand U.S.-based production of advanced semiconductors and reduce dependence on overseas manufacturing concentrated in Taiwan and other parts of Asia.
For suppliers across the electronics ecosystem, projects of this scale typically generate opportunities well beyond semiconductor fabrication equipment. PCB manufacturers, materials suppliers, automation providers, cleanroom specialists, chemical suppliers, advanced packaging vendors, and test equipment manufacturers all stand to benefit from new domestic semiconductor capacity.
SpaceX and Tesla said the Grimes County site was selected for its available land, infrastructure access, and proximity to major Texas manufacturing centers. The companies also announced plans to use surface water from Gibbons Creek Reservoir for industrial operations, implement onsite wastewater treatment and water recycling systems, and comply with applicable environmental regulations governing semiconductor manufacturing.
Terafab joins a growing list of major semiconductor investments in Texas, where companies including Samsung Electronics, Texas Instruments, and GlobalWafers have announced or expanded manufacturing operations in recent years. Industry analysts view these investments as part of a long-term effort to strengthen the North American semiconductor supply chain while supporting increasing demand driven by AI, high-performance computing, automotive electronics, and aerospace applications.
