Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (Murata) will expand its global production capacity of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) by 2030 to meet medium- to long-term demand growth.
Murata plans to invest a total of approximately 1 trillion yen over five years, from fiscal 2026 to fiscal 2030, to expand MLCC production capacity. Of this total, investment in buildings will be roughly 350 billion yen, and investment in production equipment about 650 billion yen. Murata expects that, through these investments, MLCC sales in fiscal 2030 will reach at least 2 times those in fiscal 2025.
The plan includes constructing new production facilities at existing production sites in and outside Japan, installing production equipment, increasing the capacity of existing equipment, and acquiring some land.
Supplying MLCCs to realize an AI-powered society
MLCCs are critical components that underpin a wide range of electronic devices, including smartphones, automobiles, industrial equipment, and data centers. Murata will strengthen its capacity to supply MLCCs to broader markets, meeting growing data center demand while also looking ahead to a future in which AI is deployed across diverse fields, including edge devices, mobility, and robotics.
The plan will increase supply capacity to meet currently expanding demand while also building the production base needed from 2030 onward.
Strengthening production sites worldwide in an integrated manner
Murata has built a structure that can respond flexibly to market changes and rising demand by expanding production capacity in a balanced way, with MLCC production sites spread across Japan, ASEAN, and China. Building on this existing production system, the new production capacity expansion will allow us to continue our global capital investment.
Leveraging its strength of having production sites in multiple regions, Murata will build a stable supply system that can cope with demand fluctuations in each region and market.
Murata will also construct new production facilities in Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture, and Setouchi, Okayama Prefecture. As a result, MLCC production in Japan will operate across three sites: Okayama Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd., newly added alongside Fukui Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and Izumo Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. The investment in Okayama Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd., will aim to build a workforce of 1,500 to 2,000 people by 2030. Alongside boosting production capacity, Murata will invest in overseas sites, including in the Philippines and Thailand. In addition to capital investment, we will also work to secure and develop the human resources that underpin production, upgrade production technologies, ensure stable procurement of raw and sub-materials, and strengthen collaboration with suppliers, including equipment manufacturers.
Going forward, Murata will continue to contribute to the development of an electronics society by improving performance and ensuring a stable supply of MLCCs, leveraging its technological foundation in materials and process development, product design, and production technology, among other areas.
