DISPENSING EQUIPMENT
Flexible Tips
Ultra PP dispense tips have flexible polypropylene shafts for reaching hard-to-access areas. The PP tips, which are compatible with air-powered benchtop dispensers or automated dispense valves, apply adhesives, lubricants, and other assembly fluids. They feature SafetyLok threads to attach syringe barrels or automated dispense valves. Available in lengths of 0.5-1.5", the tips offer internal diameters of 0.054-0.010". EFD, Inc., East Providence, R.I., www.efd-inc.com
INSPECTION EQUIPMENT
X-ray Inspection System
The Jewelbox 90T - a microfocus, high-magnification, real-time X-ray inspection system - performs advanced laboratory R&D tasks. The proprietary MXRA technology produces high-resolution images that lack distortion from voltage blooming, pincushioning, or related aberrations. Auto-BGA image-processing software analyzes void percentages, roundness size, and bridging. Mechanical features include a continuous, progressive zoom from 7-2,000× magnification, a five-axis joystick positioner, and a 25 × 19.25" cabinet window. Glenbrook Technologies, Inc., Randolph, N.J., www.glenbrooktech.com.
Computerized Tomography
A 3-D imaging capability, computerized tomography (CT), joins the Revolution microfocus systems. The system’s concentric imaging and off-axis tilt, and NanoTech open-tube technology, help generate high-resolution CT 3-D data. This enables analysis from any slice or measurement within X-ray images, including isolated internal structures of components. Magnification reaches 6,000× at any angle up to 75˚. The machine can scan a 410- × 410-mm area, inspecting ball wetting, attachment, cracks, and delamination on various components and substrates. X-tek, Gt. Yarmouth, U.K., www.xtek.co.uk.
ESD-safe Imager
The Quadrus MINI ESD Safe miniature fixed-mount imager allows close-range reading of static-sensitive parts and components. Assemblers and manufacturers working with electronic components that can be damaged by static electricity can integrate the compact imager into ESD-sensitive assembly processes. Nickel coating and ESD-resistant labels circumvent the need for aerosol coating or restrictive mounting distances. The imager can scan long barcodes and high-density 2-D symbols in any direction on multiple surfaces. Microscan Systems, Inc., Renton, Wa., www.microscan.com.
PICK-AND-PLACE
Pick-and-Place Machine
The HLX8200 pick-and-place machine reaches production speeds up to 22,000 cph using a feeder capacity of 192 tape-and-stick feeders, and space for 16 JEDEC trays. The machine is capable of placing 01005s through 50- × 50- × 17-mm components, including BGAs, micro-BGAs, and flip chips. A vision system measures and aligns all parts. Back-light component illumination is said to deter reflection and inaccuracy problems. ESSEMTEC, Aesch, Switzerland, www.essemtec.com.
REWORK AND REPAIR
Fume Extraction System
To address potential health concerns for rework technicians dealing with lead-free processes, the BTX-208 fume extraction system removes solder fumes from the tip of any hand soldering iron. The system accommodates up to eight workstations and adapts to various ducting configurations. Multi-stage filtration begins with a pre-filter and EU14 HEPA main filter, followed by activated-carbon that removes gases. The system has a compact body for under-bench installation. It also features a high-vacuum blower motor and universal hose connection kit. Because lead-free solders can boil and spit, creating rosin-based colophony, the system also functions as a tip-protection device to prevent accumulation of potentially obstructive black matter on the solder iron. OK International, Menlo Park, Calif., www.okinternational.com.
SOLDERING MATERIALS
Lead-free Solder Paste
The ALPHA OM-350 lead-free solder paste targets complex surface mount applications requiring high first-pass yield and low rework rates. The paste addresses issues with mid-chip solder balls, print-volume repeatability, tombstoning, and electrical reliability. It also offers BGA component-assembly solutions and paste-in-thru-hole remedies. Cookson Electronics Assembly Materials, Jersey City, N.J., www.cooksonelectronics.com.
Solder Pallet Material
WaveMax 7000, a thermo-set composite material, features durable properties designed for pallets used in wave solder applications. For use in high-temperature, high-volume production, the material comprises an epoxy resin and random-mat glass substrate. A high glass-to-epoxy ratio is said to improve flexural strength and rigidity from 39,000 to 59,000 psi. Norplex-Micarta, Postville, Iowa, www.norplex-micarta.com.
