In-line PCB Support SystemThe In-line Red-E-Set substrate support system is for use in screen printers, dispensing systems and automated assembly machines. Unlike other optional in-line board support systems, it reportedly uses a patented spring-loaded pin support system to reduce setup time, eliminate board flex, reduce defects and increase throughput. The system is said to reduce setup times by as much as 84 percent. The system is compatible with all automatic screen printers dispensing systems and automated assembly equipment. The In-line Red-E-Set system uses independently spring-loaded, non-abrasive support pins that lock into place to fit a board's contour for repeat usage. Unlike other support systems, it uses 1.50 x 0.18" modules and can support up to 36" boards. Production Solutions Inc., Poway, Calif.
Steppers and DriversA wide variety of high-quality, low-cost, NEMA-sized hybrid steppers are available to OEMs from size 16 to 42, as well as 25, 35 and 42 mm permanent magnet steppers and two-phase bipolar drivers. With lead times reportedly as short as five weeks, they were designed for pick-and-place, medical testing equipment, linear and rotary stages, circuit board testing, robotics, semiconductor manufacturing, and assembly operations. The extensive line of single- and double-shaft hybrid steppers ranges in torque from 7 to 4,200 oz/in. The voltage range of these steppers is from 1.5 to 12.0 VDC and current ranges from 0.04 to 8.0 amps/phase. Also available are compact (2.0 x 3.0 x 1.0") bipolar drivers. Source Engineering Inc., Santa Clara, Calif.
Roller-bearing Pillow BlocksNew, pre-lubricated roller-bearing pillow blocks are said to use a more free rolling design and larger "rolling" diameter than conventional pillow blocks. Self-aligning in operation, they were designed to permit higher speeds and acceleration. The company claims that significant shaft deflection and misalignment are tolerated easily. The product is constructed on an aluminum body, while the exposed surfaces of the steel rollers have a black oxide finish to resist corrosion. An adjustable eccentric stud permits radial clearance, adjustment and pre-load. The pillow blocks fit shaft diameters of 0.5 to 4.0", and have dynamic load ratings up to 10,500 lbs for the single model and up to 21,000 lbs for the double or twin models. Metric-dimensioned models also are available. Lee Controls Inc., Piscataway, N.J.
Programming ModuleFM-3 Programming Module is DeviceNet capable. Designed to be a DeviceNet Group 2 slave device, the FM-3DN reportedly allows all parameters to be accessed from the DeviceNet master. The "DeviceNet made Easy" software maintains the drag-and-drop ease of the Powertools FM-3 Windows-based software programming tool and offers user-configurable I/O parameters. DeviceNet parameters also are displayed and can be modified using the FM-3 LCD keypad display. Emerson Motion Control Div., Emerson Electric Co., Eden Prairie, Minn.
Fast-flow and Snap-cure EncapsulantAMICON E 1172 is the newest innovative capillary flow underfill. This fast-flow, snap-cure encapsulant reportedly was formulated for use with fine-pitch area-array devices, easily underfilling devices with 25 μm geometrics. Designed for applications in which SMT transparent processing is critical, the product incorporates one-component epoxy chemistry that is non-anhydride curing for enhanced moisture resistance. The underfill is highly loaded to match the low CTE of solder for maximum part reliability, and boasts a long working life that is said to result in consistent dispense characteristics over multiple production shifts. Emerson & Cuming, A National Starch & Chemical Co., Billerica, Mass.
Stencil Laser SystemTurboCut II reportedly allows fast cuts of round apertures from 0.003 to 0.30" with a performance up to 30,000 holes per hour and a shape accuracy of 96 percent. It is designed to support the requirements of state-of-the-art stencils with large amounts of flip chip, wafer bump or SP apertures. The reportedly high performance allows fast and precise laser cutting of SMT stencils with 120,000+ apertures. LPKF Laser & Electronics USA, Wilsonville, Ore.
ASSEMBLY TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
Die CutterUltraPress, said to handle everything from large graphics to intricate membrane switches, performs such tasks as thermal die-cut, emboss, hot and cold steel-rule die cut, and steel-rule kiss cut. Available from 20 x 28" to 60 x 144", the system can be used as a freestanding unit or in-line as part of a system. CONTECH, Goddard, Kan.
Depanelizing and Marking PCBsA laser beam delivered through a flying optics system, SL-3020G reportedly was designed for cutting and marking populated and unpopulated ceramic and fiber PCBs. Parts remain stationary during the operation as the fully graphical operator interface and Windows 98 controls directly read CAD files. The imbedded controls require no external PC for programming or operation. The company's proprietary vector velocity algorithm monitors the motion system's speed and adjusts the laser output accordingly during accelerations and decelerations for clean, sharp lines and corners without burn spots. Online Inc., McHenry Ill.
Taped Radial Component Lead FormerCF-9 is said to precisely and repeatedly cut and form two and three leaded taped components in standard and special forms. The system offers two independently adjustable die stations that are displayed on micrometer scales in increments of 0.0005". The dies reportedly are replaced easily in minutes, minimizing changeover time from one setting to another. The machine forms and cuts up to 25,000 parts per hour at a repeatability of ±0.002". The model features rugged construction with sealed ball-bearing shaft assemblies for low maintenance. Built in compliance with European safety standards, it also is available in a CE-approved version. GPD Global, a division of LIFT Industries Inc., Grand Junction, Colo.
Cut-off SawS100 is a cut-off saw for headers and other electronic components, which are placed on the table and brought underneath the saw blade. An adjustable end stop is used to set the length of the cut. Cutting speed may be selected for optimal cutting efficiency. A positioning knife next to the saw blade fits into the slots of the header so that the blade automatically will cut at the next position. The component guide slot table is made adjustable by a positioning screw that may be turned to widen or shorten the channel for holding the header body. Cut components drop into a removable collection tray while a counter allows the operator to determine how many cuts have been made. FKN Systek, Waltham, Mass.
