US Interventional Cardiology Device Market Report
July 8, 2015 | PRNewswireEstimated reading time: 1 minute
Interventional cardiology is a minimally-invasive technique that uses catheters to treat coronary arterial disease, which is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. The most common interventional cardiology procedure is percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), which is performed for the management of coronary atherosclerosis.
There are many different types of complementary devices used during interventional cardiology procedures. These devices include coronary stents, PTCA and cutting balloon catheters, balloon-inflation devices, interventional coronary catheters and guidewires, coronary embolic protection devices, coronary atherectomy devices, coronary thrombectomy devices, coronary chronic total occlusion devices, coronary introducer sheaths, coronary vascular closure devices, diagnostic coronary catheters and guidewires, fractional flow reserve (FFR) guidewires, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) catheters and optical coherence tomography (OCT) catheters.
The interventional cardiology market has been declining recently due to decreases in stenting procedures. In recent years, over-stenting has been scrutinized heavily, with multiple studies estimating that approximately 30% of stenting is unnecessary. This scrutiny has resulted in a significant decrease in the stent market, and since this market is by far the largest out of the total interventional cardiology market, these declines have had a significant negative impact on the total market.
Many established standard items have become commodities and are close to homogeneous in their substitutability. Thus, it has been and will continue to be the role of new or specialized devices that receive positive clinical trials to act as catalysts for growth and to increase the market share of companies that are able to capitalize on the opportunity.
