Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Global Optical MEMS Market 2015-2019" report to their offering.
The report predicts the global optical MEMS market to grow at a CAGR of 7.47% over the period 2014-2019.
MEMS is increasingly being used in holographic displays, which project a 3D image without the help of projection screens, and are used in events, product launches, and conferences. Vendors are focusing on reducing the production cost for optical MEMS, which will increase their adoption in the consumer electronics market.
According to the report, the optical MEMS market is primarily driven by the telecommunication segment, owing to a high demand for greater bandwidth. Due to an increasing penetration of the Internet of Things (IoT), optical MEMS are required in datacenters to transfer and receive information over dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) networks. The adoption of optical MEMS is also increasing in wearables and thermal imaging applications.
Further, the report states that the optical MEMS market faces a challenge due to high complexities in designing the wafers. The complex design and manufacturing process increases the time and cost of manufacturing. The packaging cost of optical MEMS is high because of the use of vacuum technology, which is required to improve the efficiency of optical MEMS such as micromirrors and microbolometers.
