Global Sourcing Spotlight: 10 Rules of the Game

No matter how many times I visit potential customers, I never tire of giving them advice on global sourcing. It also never surprises me that they usually know very little about the subject. They think they do, but once we discuss the idea of buying products offshore, they have many misconceptions. This made me think that there needs to be some sort of primer or a set of guidelines on the subject.

Global Sourcing Spotlight: The Importance of Cooperative Partnerships

In today's interconnected world, global sourcing has evolved from a mere transaction to a complex web of relationships. The days when finding the cheapest supplier was the goal are long gone. Instead, the focus has shifted to building cooperative partnerships that ensure not only cost efficiency but also reliability, quality, and sustainability. The success of any global sourcing strategy hinges on the ability to foster these partnerships, which are based on mutual trust, shared goals, and a deep understanding of each other's strengths and limitations.

Global Sourcing Spotlight: A World Full of Product Expertise

When it comes to global sourcing, not all countries and products are created equal. Over the years, through travel and experience, I have discovered where to find the best products. Interestingly, certain countries have developed expertise in producing certain products. When it comes to industrial and electronic products, certain regions and countries are renowned for their expertise and manufacturing capabilities in specific areas. I am sure someone could write a book, and perhaps someone already has, about why certain countries excel in producing certain products.

Global Sourcing Spotlight: More Than Just Saving Money

Last year, I was talking with a potential customer about how I could help her business save money by getting a better value from one of my sources on products she needed to purchase. She was extremely skeptical and only agreed to talk to me because of one of my resourceful salespeople. As we toured her facility, I saw several ways to help her company. She was not an easy sell, and as a true professional, she put me through the proverbial wringer. She tested me not only on why she should buy globally but also on why she should use my company. Eventually, we did business together.

Global Sourcing Spotlight: How Travel Has Enhanced My Life and Work

One of the great things about my job as president of ASC Global Sourcing is that I get to travel around the world, and the best part about that is meeting people of all nationalities and origins. Although we all come from various and different backgrounds, in so many ways we are the same. Most of us share the same family values and love of our country. When it comes to taking our work seriously and wanting to do the best job, we also have pretty similar beliefs.

Global Sourcing Spotlight: Golf, Friedman, and the Benefits of Global Sourcing

When I started working on global sourcing for American Standard Circuits, a friend sent me a book by the NY Times economist Thomas Friedman called The Lexis and the Olive Tree. Well, not being a fan of the NYT or even economists as a whole, I put the book on a shelf and forgot about it until I got a call from my book-giving friend, and he asked me what I thought of the book. I mumbled something unintelligible and quickly changed the subject.

Global Sourcing Spotlight: Don’t Be Afraid of Global Sourcing

On paper, it doesn’t seem like a great time for global sourcing. With several world conflicts, it may seem impossible to think that something like global sourcing and commercial trade between countries could begin to alleviate this tension between warring countries. But hey, I’ve always been a glass-half-full guy, so humor me. While trade between countries can indeed foster cooperation and contribute to peace in several ways, it's essential to recognize that it's not a panacea for all global issues. However, here are some ways in which trade can contribute to peace and global stability.

Global Sourcing Spotlight: Global Sourcing is Good for Everyone

In business, as in life, it’s important to have an open mind. Take the people you work with at face value rather than what you are told by politicians and the media. It has always been amazing to me how easy it is to have resentment toward a people, as a country (or nationality) until you get up close and personal. Then it is not so easy. Dealing with people face to face, as human beings and fellow citizens of the world, where you get to see them as they are, is so much better and more productive. All business is people dealing with people. If we can keep it at that level, the world will become a much better place.

Global Sourcing Spotlight: The Myth of ‘Buying American’

I know that "buying American" has been deeply ingrained in the American psyche for generations. It represents a sense of patriotism and loyalty to one's country, and it's often associated with the belief that purchasing products labeled as "Made in the USA" supports domestic industries and workers. However, this notion can be misleading and oversimplified. In reality, the global economy is far more interconnected than it appears, and many products labeled as American are, in fact, a blend of international components. This column explores 12 instances where you may think you're buying American but you’re not.

Global Sourcing Spotlight: Get Out of China? It’s Quite Complex

There is a lot of uncertainty in the global marketplace, and because of that, I’m often asked to find alternative sources, particularly when companies want to get out of China. Now, I sympathize with that, but when you look at the entire situation, you’ll see it’s not always as simple as it might first appear.

Global Sourcing Spotlight: Why We Need Global Sourcing

There are still too many people who are wary of global sourcing. It’s as though they feel using global sourcing means they are cheating in some way, that they’re being disloyal to domestic suppliers. Honestly, I can see why some people feel that way, but it just doesn’t make any sense.

Global Sourcing Spotlight: My Six-step Process to Finding the Right Global Partners

I often get frustrated when companies underestimate what it takes to find a global partner.
