Certifications have historically been seen as a cost of doing business, but how do we turn them into a positive ROI and a value to both customer and vendor?
The Butterfly Effect
The basis of chaos theory is a key concept known as the “butterfly effect.” It’s the idea that a small event in one place creates a cascading set of events elsewhere. So, how is the EMS landscape changing? We’re tracking the concerns and dynamics of this landscape, and there’s a lot to learn.

During these unprecedented times, the need for electronic component test equipment is growing. As a certified and specialist maker of test equipment, GEN3 has responded to this industry requirement by bringing Sharon Beckett into the team.
Sharon joins the GEN3 team of market experts as a product specialist to assist in the engineering, development, and manufacture of the company’s Surface Insulation Resistance Test equipment.
The sourcing of component parts has been a strain for many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and electronic manufacturing services (EMS) providers for several months now. Even before COVID-19, we were aware of issues in sourcing that resulted in electronic makers review alternative sourcing streams, placing their supply chains under a microscope. With this shift, many OEMs and EMS companies are investing in test equipment to ensure their quality standards are met throughout this challenging and time critical period.
This demand ripples throughout the entire supply chain and affects companies like GEN3 that has met this challenge by ramping up its own production schedule and growing its team in order to meet a rising forecast.
The GEN3 team would like to take this opportunity to welcome Sharon Beckett to their team as Product Specialist for their Surface Insulation Resistance Test equipment, ‘AutoSir2+’.
Sharon joins GEN3 from Weston Aerospace, where she held an electro-mechanical role for over 15 years. In accordance with GEN3’s desire to invest in its people via qualification, Sharon is a Certified Trainer for IPC A-610, J-STD-001 and WHMA-A-620 and has held these for the last 6 years.
On her appointment, Sharon said, “Joining GEN3 is a new chapter for me and it’s exciting to work with a small team of focussed subject matter experts to bring award winning products out into the field, which ultimately helps the electronic industry to feel safe and protected. The AutoSIR2+™ system that I am now responsible for, allows state-of-the-art accuracy resistance measurements to be made up to 1014 ?. One AutoSIR2+ chassis can hold between 1 to 16 measurement cards and can monitor up to 256 x 2-point test patterns, 78 x 5-point test patterns, or 32 x 9-point test patterns at selectable intervals from minutes to days. Each channel is current limited (1 M ?), which encourages growth of dendrites for failure analysis. The frequent monitoring capability provides a full picture of the electrochemical reactions taking place on a circuit assembly and provides early trend analysis enabling tests to be curtailed, thus saving considerable test time and money.”
Andrew Naisbitt, director at GEN3 added, “We welcome the opportunity to add talent to our team. As a relatively small team, it’s important for us to bring in the right people who we know will gel with our company culture from the outset, we knew from Sharon’s experience and desire to continuously learn, that she’d fit right in. We also see the growth in demand for our test equipment as a real positive that the electronic makers are taking a responsible stance to ensuring production accuracy. Please join us in welcoming Sharon to our engineering team.”
