Altium Releases New Version of PCB Design Software Committed to Passionate Design
November 17, 2016 | PRWEBEstimated reading time: 1 minute

After experiencing record user growth in the past year, Altium has launched the latest version of their leading PCB design software with Altium Designer 17. This release further embodies Altium’s commitment to passionate design by significantly reducing the time spent on non-design related tasks. Designers can leverage several advanced new technologies to center their focus on actual design rather than the mundane tasks that often plague the design process.
“Altium Designer 17 is a continuation of our ongoing pursuit to shift the focus back onto what engineers are passionate about: designing electronics.” said Henry Potts, Chief Operations Officer at Altium. “Altium Designer is all about the engineer, and we want to capture what inspired our customers to start designing electronics in the first place by automating as much of the process as possible and putting the focus on creative solutions to engineering challenges.”
Electronics design attracts engineers with a deeply ingrained passion for the creative process, yet most of their time is spent outside that realm. Altium Designer 17 allows engineers to indulge their passion by shifting their focus back to creating designs, as evident with ActiveRoute®, the latest breakthrough in routing technology. ActiveRoute enables designers to interactively guide their routes across the entire board in minutes, allowing them more time to perfect their designs and come up with creative solutions to issues that arise during development.
Coupled with the automated documentation technology in Draftsman®, designers have the opportunity to bring innovation to the forefront by accurately communicating design intent the first time. With Altium Designer 17, engineers are no longer bound by a burdensome process that pulls them away from designs and are free to explore their creativity and produce more inspired designs.
“PCB designers continue to be confronted with time-consuming interactive routing challenges,” said Charles Pfeil, Senior Product Manager at Altium. “With ActiveRoute, we’ve pushed routing technology into a new frontier by providing complete user control and flexibility for high quality routing in a small fraction of the time.”

RF PCB Design Tips and Tricks
05/08/2025 | Cherie Litson, EPTAC MIT CID/CID+There are many great books, videos, and information online about designing PCBs for RF circuits. A few of my favorite RF sources are Hans Rosenberg, Stephen Chavez, and Rick Hartley, but there are many more. These PCB design engineers have a very good perspective on what it takes to take an RF design from schematic concept to PCB layout.
Cadence Unveils Millennium M2000 Supercomputer with NVIDIA Blackwell Systems
05/08/2025 | Cadence Design SystemsAt its annual flagship user event, CadenceLIVE Silicon Valley 2025, Cadence announced a major expansion of its Cadence® Millennium™ Enterprise Platform with the introduction of the new Millennium M2000 Supercomputer featuring NVIDIA Blackwell systems, which delivers AI-accelerated simulation at unprecedented speed and scale across engineering and drug design workloads.
The Right Blend: Mixed Wireless Technologies
05/08/2025 | Kirsten Zima, Siemens EDAA common trend recently is to employ as many radios as possible on a single PCB. With the increase of wireless standards and the downscaling of PCB size, it can be difficult to know what the most critical design parameters are to focus on. In this article, we’ll discuss the most important considerations to make when designing with mixed wireless technologies, such as Bluetooth, GPS, and Wi-Fi, on a single PCB. These considerations include antennas, frequencies, FCC compliance, shielding, and layout with and without transition vias.

PCB East Continues to Expand
05/06/2025 | Andy Shaughnessy, Design007 MagazineIt was a perfect week for a conference and trade show in metropolitan Boston, with high temperatures in the 70s. PCB East took place at the Boxboro Regency Hotel and Conference Center April 29–May 2, with the expo on April 30. PCB East has been expanding since its relaunch a few years ago, with conference and show attendance rising each year.
