Axiom Electronics to Host the Portland Robotics Operating System Development Meetup
June 16, 2017 | Axiom ElectronicsEstimated reading time: 1 minute
Axiom Electronics' training room will be filled when Haddington Dynamics introduces Dexter, a 5-axis robot arm, to the Portland Robotics Operating System (ROS) Development Meetup on June 19.
The Dexter arm handles a 1kg payload with .05mm placement repeatability throughout the arm’s range. Dexter is completely programmable and also manually trainable using a move-and-repeat process.
Dexter comes in kit form, so the meeting will focus on the building process and robot control. But participants will find the basic design process interesting: Dexter uses many off-the-shelf components (COTS) with some serious computing power provided by an FPGA module operating at 276 GMACS running a real-time physics engine and kinematics fed from multiple sensors embedded at all the axes. The more specialized parts are 3D and the entire design is released under an OpenSource license.
The Dexter design controls costs to keep the arm affordable for hobbyists as well as commercial use. Dexter is now available for order through crowd-funding site Kickstarter, another subject that the ROS group will enjoy discussing.
Haddington Dynamics is currently building and delivering Dexter arms and Dexter arm kits. Axiom Electronics is working with and exploring commercial opportunities with the Dexter robot arm.
Axiom Electronics provides electronics manufacturing, assembly, depot repair and testing services to companies creating technologically sophisticated highly reliable commercial, industrial, and government systems.
