Beyond the Rulebook
What happens when the rule book is no longer useful, or worse, was never written in the first place? In today’s fast-moving electronics landscape, we’re increasingly asked to design and build what has no precedent, no proven path, and no tidy checklist to follow. This is where “Design for Invention” begins.
March Madness
From the growing role of AI in design tools to the challenge of managing cumulative tolerances, these articles in this issue examine the technical details, design choices, and manufacturing considerations that determine whether a board works as intended.

Version 2.8 of Ucamco's Free Reference Gerber Viewer Now Available
October 11, 2018 | UcamcoEstimated reading time: 1 minute
Version 2.8 of the Reference Gerber Viewer is now available.
"For version 2.8 of the Reference Gerber Viewer our focus was ease of use and especially ease of learning. Plenty of users of the viewer need it only from time to time, and for them it is of paramount importance that it is very intuitive," said Peter Vermeulen, lead developer of the Reference Gerber Viewer.
"The Reference Gerber Viewer now displays all the meta-information contained in Gerber X2 files: the layer structure, where the via pads are, the CAD netlist, component reference descriptor and pin number of all the pads. If you want to find out what extra information is contained in an X2 file, check the X2 files in the Reference Gerber Viewer. We feel it is the best online X2 viewer," added Karel Tavernier, managing director of Ucamco.
The Reference Gerber Viewer is a cloud-based online web service. There is no software to download, install and maintain, and it is always up to date. It is kept simple and easy to learn. It offers the following benefits:
- For developers, it provides a reliable verification of Gerber output software.
- For creators of Gerber files, it provides a reliable check of the generated Gerber and NC files.
- For recipients of Gerber files, it provides an accurate way to validate the input and arbitrate in discussions about the interpretation of a file.
Ucamco provides the Reference Gerber Viewer free of charge at gerber-viewer.ucamco.com.
