Current IssueMechatronics
Our expert contributors discuss the advent of mechatronics in PCB design, the challenges and opportunities this creates for circuit board designers, and the benefits—to the employee and the company—of becoming a mechatronics engineer.
Creating a Culture of Collaboration
PCB designers could learn quite a bit from NASA and the private companies that develop spacecraft: Every one of these vehicles is a testament to the value of collaboration among disparate stakeholders. Without a collaborative culture, the rocket might never get off the ground.
Breaking High-speed Material Constraints
Do you need specialty materials for your high-speed designs? Maybe not. Improvements in resins mean designers of high-speed boards can sometimes use traditional laminate systems. Learn more in this issue.

Lenthor Engineering, Inc., a California-based designer, manufacturer and assembler of rigid-flex and flex printed circuit boards, announces its 2020 mid-year financial results.
Strong performance was reported for Q2 2020 with revenue totaling $9.4M an increase from Q1 2020’s reported revenue of $8.3M. With these results, Lenthor Engineering retains its position as one of the largest privately owned flex and rigid-flex fabrication and assembly companies in North America.
Profit totals for mid-year 2020 also reported in with a significant year over year increase over the same period of 2019. The increase in profitability can be attributed to the previous year’s capitalization expenditures coming on-line during Q3 and Q4 of 2019 and into Q1 2020. Lenthor Engineering’s Order Book continued to show strength as well with a reported 1.06% Book-to-Bill ratio.
Lenthor Engineering is focusing future growth opportunity on moving into full production on designs incorporating advanced dielectric materials. This focus is driven by forecast demand in the use of these materials from several major account partners within Lenthor Engineering’s key markets of support, mil/aero, telecom, and medical.

Elementary, Mr. Watson: Mechatronics—The Swiss Army Knife of Engineering
07/23/2024 | John Watson -- Column: Elementary, Mr. WatsonMany folks in my age group raised on a farm always carried a pocket knife. My choice was a Swiss Army Knife. It was a versatile, multi-functional pocketknife manufactured by Victorinox and Wenger and is renowned for its compact design. What was nice about the Swiss Army Knife was the array of tools that fold out from its handles. Whatever job you need to accomplish, the Swiss Army knife can handle it.

Flexible Thinking: Mechatronics in a Flex World
07/17/2024 | Joe Fjelstad -- Column: Flexible ThinkingMechatronics integrates two seemingly disparate engineering disciplines—mechanics and electronics—into a single subject. From my experience, the two disciplines are not the most compatible roommates because they are often at cross-purposes when implemented together. Interestingly, having been manufacturing, inventing, and writing about flexible circuits for more than four decades, I recognized that they actually fit perfectly.
