Interested in smart manufacturing? iNEMI is starting a new project looking into the benefits that artificial intelligence (AI) may bring to automated optical inspection (AOI) of printed circuit board assemblies. The Investigation of AI Enhancement to AOI for PCBA project will investigate the current use of AI for AOI, develop and establish common performance metrics to evaluate the AI value-add to AOI capabilities, and provide recommendations to the industry on opportunities for future improvement and implementation.
By working together with EMS and OEM users, AOI equipment vendors can better understand what to evaluate and how to apply AI technologies for their existing AOI solutions. The ultimate goal of this iNEMI project is to drive inspection efficiency and accuracy and, at the same time, leverage AI-enhanced technologies to reduce manual inspection verification and mitigate the defect escape risk.
