Memorial Day 2022, a National Day of RemembranceMay 30, 2022 | I-Connect007 Editorial Team
Estimated reading time: Less than a minute
Today, May 30, is a federal holiday in the United States, and the unofficial beginning of summer. Memorial Day dates back to the years after the Civil War. On May 5, 1868, General John Logan, commander of the Grand Army of the republic, proclaimed May 30 to be Decoration Day.
His proclamation read, “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land."
On that first Decoration Day, thousands of people decorated the graves of 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried at Arlington Cemetery while future president General James Garfield delivered a speech. Congress passed the National Holiday Act of 1971, which set the last Monday in May as Memorial Day, now recognized as a federal holiday.
I-Connect007 wishes you all a happy Memorial Day.

On Tuesday, January 30, considered “day zero” of DesignCon 2024, I caught up with Suzanne Deffree, group event director, during the Samtec welcome reception. She gave me an update on the event, particularly the launch of an initiative called 40 Under 40, a years-long effort to enable the next generation of engineers, and their interest in sustainability. We also talked about Drive World, and the important new focus on electric vehicles.
We have come a long way from business executives like “Nuclear” Jack Welsh and Al “Chainsaw” Dunlap. Remember when old Milton Freidman declared that a business’ only obligation was to its holders or when employees were disposables (practically consumables)? Remember when people like Jack and Al were practically carried on the shoulders of Wall Street traders based on how many heads they had chopped off the week before? Oh, those were the days, my friend, we thought they’d never end. Well, they’re over. They are chipping Jack’s name off GE buildings, and Al is dead and buried both physically and in reputation.
