Current IssueRules of Thumb
This month, we delve into rules of thumb—which ones work, which ones should be avoided. Rules of thumb are everywhere, but there may be hundreds of rules of thumb for PCB design. How do we separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak?
Partial HDI
Our expert contributors provide a complete, detailed view of partial HDI this month. Most experienced PCB designers can start using this approach right away, but you need to know these tips, tricks and techniques first.
Silicon to Systems: From Soup to Nuts
This month, we asked our expert contributors to weigh in on silicon to systems—what it means to PCB designers and design engineers, EDA companies, and the rest of the PCB supply chain... from soup to nuts.

Cadence Partners with GSME to Further Semiconductor Industry Growth in Oman
June 28, 2024 | Cadence Design Systems, Inc.Estimated reading time: 2 minutes
The global semiconductor supply chain is undergoing a profound transformation driven by several disruptive factors. These include the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions prompting government initiatives and funding, evolving demands in the automotive industry, and the push for sustainability. As a result, significant market dynamics have emerged, offering a valuable opportunity for countries in the Middle East and North Africa region to position themselves at the forefront of the semiconductor industry through timely and decisive action.
It is in this climate that Oman embarks on an exciting new chapter in its future economic development. As part of Oman Vision 2040, the nation's Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour, is propelling the growth of its semiconductor industry. GSME Oman, an affiliate of GS Microelectronics, leads the charge as the frontrunner in Oman's emergent semiconductor industry following the announcement of their locally designed Oman-1 and Oman-2 chips.
GSME is a global provider of customized silicon solutions, including RF design, power management ICs, manufacturing operations, and quality assurance (QA), to IC design and system companies. Cadence is honored to partner with GSME to further semiconductor industry growth in Oman and across the Middle East more broadly. Cadence contributes to GSME collaborative initiatives with universities and governments throughout the extended region, including academic partnerships in various countries in the region.
Cadence is excited to collaborate on insight, strategy, and a workforce blueprint to support GSME in fostering strong collaboration between the industry and government. Additionally, GSME will use the Cadence® Managed Cloud Service for its chip design activities and leverage Cadence’s advanced EDA software hosted securely in the cloud.
Farhat Jahangir, GSME CEO, explained, “As a leading provider of custom silicon solutions with a focus on leading-edge manufacturing technology for next-generation applications, GSME requires a partner who is well positioned to support our mission—delivering value-added services and expertise to semiconductor and systems companies. Cadence is perfectly aligned to be that partner as we leverage the Cadence Managed Cloud Service to provide consistently excellent engineering solutions tailored to our customers' needs.”
“The Cadence Managed Cloud Service provides a secure, collaborative design environment that allows customers like GSME to quickly and easily become productive with their EDA workloads on the cloud without assuming a heavy IT cost burden,” expressed Mahesh Turaga, vice president of cloud business development at Cadence. “GSME will also be able to leverage Cadence design services and EDA tool support to drive innovation in their chip design activities and mitigate risk associated with IT system downtime, keeping their customers' projects on schedule.”
The rapidly advancing semiconductor market in the Middle East is projected to grow at a CAGR of 9% from 2024 to 2032(opens in a new tab). The Cadence-GSME partnership ensures GSME will stay at the forefront of semiconductor technology and ecosystem development. By offering a secure and reliable design environment in the cloud, Cadence is glad to support GSME's initiatives to collaborate with regional governments and universities, safeguarding sustained technological progress and innovation.
