PCB Design Takes Center Stage at FED’s Design Awards

09/17/2026 | Marcy LaRont, I-Connect007
PCB designers often work behind the scenes, but their decisions can determine whether an electronic product succeeds in manufacturing. At the FED Annual Conference in Germany on Sept. 23, the PCB Design Award 2026 will put that work in the spotlight. Marcy LaRont interviewed FED Managing Director Christoph Bornhorn and board member Erika Reel about what makes a winning design, and how the profession is changing as AI, automation, and other technologies reshape electronics development.

September I-Connect007 Magazine Pairs PCB Automation With Human Expertise

09/16/2026 | I-Connect007 Editorial Team
The September issue of I-Connect007 Magazine examines why employee experience and judgment remain essential as manufacturers bring more automation onto the shop floor. Industry experts share how companies can combine these strengths to improve processes without losing the knowledge behind them. Plus: We cover what's going in with the European PCB Design community.

Elementary, Mr. Watson: The Rise and Fall of Europe's PCB Design Community

09/16/2026 | John Watson -- Column: Elementary, Mr. Watson
One of the most famous lines associated with the attack on Pearl Harbor was attributed to Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. After the horrific attack of Dec. 7, 1941, he was reported to declare, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant." That image has endured because it captured the moment when something enormous, and perhaps underestimated, began to move. Today, another giant is awakening in Europe, and it may not be what or where you expect. It’s not from one country, company, or organization, but from an entire region that has built a deep engineering heritage and a long history in electronics. At the center is Europe’s PCB design community.

Marcy’s Musings: A World of Difference

09/17/2026 | Marcy LaRont -- Column: Marcy's Musings
I've spent a good deal of time in Asia over the years, both traveling and living there, so arriving in Thailand for THECA wasn't my first experience stepping into another culture or another way of doing business. Still, there is something about being there—moving through a different city, sitting down with people, listening to their conversations, and watching how they approach familiar challenges—that gets me thinking.

Connect the Dots: What PCB Designers Should Know About Materials

09/10/2026 | Matt Stevenson -- Column: Connect the Dots
What questions does your manufacturer ask when they receive a design? I can tell you one: “How will we build this?” Every PCB design has specific parameters for elements such as impedance, thermal conductivity, and SI. Designers choose material properties based on the functionality requirements of the boards they design. Does the PCB have to operate in high heat? Be flexible enough to fit into a tiny device, such as a wearable? Maintain SI without distortion or data degradation?
