Beyond the Rulebook
What happens when the rule book is no longer useful, or worse, was never written in the first place? In today’s fast-moving electronics landscape, we’re increasingly asked to design and build what has no precedent, no proven path, and no tidy checklist to follow. This is where “Design for Invention” begins.
March Madness
From the growing role of AI in design tools to the challenge of managing cumulative tolerances, these articles in this issue examine the technical details, design choices, and manufacturing considerations that determine whether a board works as intended.
Looking Forward to APEX EXPO 2026

A Plan for Floor Planning: Design007 Magazine August 2025
August 8, 2025 | I-Connect007 Editorial TeamEstimated reading time: 1 minute
Floor planning is like designing a city or arranging furniture in a new home—it’s not just about making things fit!
Engineers have to weigh dozens (sometimes hundreds) of tradeoffs to balance electrical performance with physical and cost constraints. The decisions made here ripple through the rest of the project: stackup choices can come back to haunt you, and component placement can impact signal integrity, routing efficiency, and overall manufacturability. And as pitch shrinks, the margin for error disappears.
There are countless ways to go wrong in floor planning. Don’t worry: this month, in Design007 Magazine, our contributors share their best practices and proven strategies to help you stay ahead and avoid that dreaded 5:30 p.m. Friday call from the fabricator.

The Missing Connection: Wire Harness Quoting Joins the Digital Age
05/01/2026 | Joanne Harris, Tech-2marketingWalk the floor of a modern wire harness manufacturing facility, and the investment in technology is hard to miss. Automated wire cutting and stripping machines process thousands of cuts an hour with sub-millimeter precision. Computerized crimping presses deliver consistent, validated terminations that a hand tool never could. Laser wire markers, automated test benches, and vision-guided assembly stations represent hundreds of thousands of dollars of capital investment, all in service of building a better harness faster and more reliably than the competition.
Educational Highlights From the APEX EXPO 2026 Show Floor
03/27/2026 | Kimberly Kutnick, Global Electronics AssociationAPEX EXPO 2026 featured many legacy treasures, but it was the inaugural year for the Technology Pavilion, which featured 10 speakers over two days. It was just one feature on the show floor that specifically highlighted technical learning and innovation. Topics presented at the Technology Pavilion included copper nanoparticle inkjet printing on rigid PCBs, how AI and collaboration can level up an electronics supply chain, accelerating the design-to-manufacturing flow, and automated spatial micro-sectioning.
I-Connect007 Editor’s Choice: Five Must-Reads for the Week
03/13/2026 | Nolan Johnson, I-Connect007Cue up “The Final Countdown, the monster ’80s hit song by Swedish band Europe, because it’s almost APEX EXPO week. Side note: When it comes to rock anthems, I’m more of an “Eye of the Tiger” man, myself. Some folks are already arriving in Anaheim, as standards development committee work starts as early as tomorrow. The show continues through Thursday, March 19.
One World, One Industry: Attending APEX EXPO 2026 Critical for Electronics Manufacturing Leaders
02/20/2026 | John Mitchell -- Column: One World, One IndustryAPEX EXPO is where the electronics industry convenes, highlights, and demos the current and future of electronics. It’s a must-attend event. As technology is increasingly more complex and supply chains shift and require agility, APEX EXPO is the forum where technicians, designers, engineers, procurement specialists, and C-suite leaders come together to see cutting-edge systems and technologies and build valuable partnerships.
It’s Only Common Sense: Great Leaders Lead From the Front
11/24/2025 | Dan Beaulieu -- Column: It's Only Common SenseThere’s an old military saying: “A title doesn’t make you a leader, visibility does.” You can have the corner office, the fancy title, and your name on the building, but none of it matters if your people rarely see you. Leadership is about showing up, standing with your team, and proving every day that you’re in this with them.
