Beyond the Rulebook
What happens when the rule book is no longer useful, or worse, was never written in the first place? In today’s fast-moving electronics landscape, we’re increasingly asked to design and build what has no precedent, no proven path, and no tidy checklist to follow. This is where “Design for Invention” begins.

Transition Automation to Showcase Recently Patented Soft-Touch Paste Retainers at APEX EXPO 2026
January 12, 2026 | Transition AutomationEstimated reading time: 1 minute
Transition Automation, Inc., the leading provider of high performance metal squeegee blades and holder systems, is proud to highlight the continued success and recent advancements of its Soft Touch™ Paste Retainer system. Transition Automation will be showcasing this system at the upcoming APEX EXPO 2026, Booth 2603, for those who would like to see these enhancements and performance benefits up close. Designed to address some of the most persistent challenges in SMT stencil printing, the Soft Touch Paste Retainer system continues to gain traction across demanding electronics manufacturing environments.
Since its introduction in 2020, the Soft Touch™ Paste Retainer system has seen rapid adoption across electronics manufacturing environments where print consistency, paste control, and uptime are critical. In SMT printing, uncontrolled solder paste movement can lead to edge bleed, paste waste, inconsistent deposits, and frequent operator intervention. These issues not only impact yield but also increase cleaning cycles and slow production.
The SoftTouch™ Paste Retainer system was engineered specifically to improve solder paste management at the stencil. By keeping paste confined to the active PCB print area, the retainers help maintain consistent paste roll behavior, reduce smearing outside the print zone, and minimize paste drying at the stencil edges. This results in more stable prints, less material waste, and improved process repeatability.
In October 2025, the SoftTouch™ Paste Retainer system achieved a major milestone when it was officially recognized by the United States Patent Office. U.S. Patent No. 12,440,910 B2, titled “Paste Retainer Systems and Methods for Use in Paste Printing Systems,” validates the unique design approach that differentiates the system from traditional paste containment methods.
At the same time, Transition Automation introduced a series of design upgrades to further enhance durability and performance. The updated retainers feature a more rugged construction and improved spring action, providing controlled downward contact that maintains a reliable seal against the stencil foil without risking damage. This delicate balance helps preserve stencil life while ensuring consistent paste containment throughout long production runs.
Operator convenience was also a key design priority. The SoftTouch™ Paste Retainers feature easily removable end caps, enabling quick cleanup and efficient removal of dried paste during maintenance or changeovers, reducing downtime and simplifying daily operations.
