Beyond the Rulebook
What happens when the rule book is no longer useful, or worse, was never written in the first place? In today’s fast-moving electronics landscape, we’re increasingly asked to design and build what has no precedent, no proven path, and no tidy checklist to follow. This is where “Design for Invention” begins.
March Madness
From the growing role of AI in design tools to the challenge of managing cumulative tolerances, these articles in this issue examine the technical details, design choices, and manufacturing considerations that determine whether a board works as intended.

Lockheed Martin Ships 2nd Aegis Vessel Set with AN/SPY-7 Radar to Japan
March 16, 2026 | Lockheed MartinEstimated reading time: 1 minute
Lockheed Martin, successfully delivered the second Aegis System Equipped Vessel (ASEV) shipset of AN/SPY-7(V)1 radar equipment to the Japan Ministry of Defense (JMOD). The delivery was facilitated through Mitsubishi Corporation under a Direct Commercial Sale arrangement.
"The successful on-time delivery of all equipment for the second ASEV shipment showcases the speed at which we are delivering to our customers in Japan, while demonstrating the maturity and scalability of the SPY-7 radar,” said Chandra Marshall, vice president of Multi-Domain Combat Solutions at Lockheed Martin.
Moving with Speed
In June 2025, Lockheed Martin completed the delivery of the first shipment of Aegis System Equipped Vessel AN/SPY-7(V)1 radar equipment to Japan. Achieving all delivery milestones demonstrates Lockheed Martin’s commitment to strengthening defense capabilities throughout the Indo-Pacific.
Full system integration and testing of the complete second shipset of equipment will be conducted prior to final equipment delivery to Japan, which significantly reduces integration risk and enables on-schedule commissioning.
The JMOD is acquiring two ASEVs, and both are on track for commissioning in Japan Fiscal Year 2027 and 2028.
The SPY-7 Advantage
With advanced detection and tracking capabilities, SPY-7 counters complex threats, while enabling engagement of multiple targets and enhancing the effectiveness of naval forces in a constantly evolving environment.
The selection of Lockheed Martin’s solid-state radar by both the U.S. and multiple international allies demonstrates the world-class capability and maturity of the radar.
Testimonial
