The Marketing Minute: Why I Wrote 'Marketing in 17 Minutes'
This month, I'm excited to release my first book, Marketing in 17 Minutes: A Guide to Marketing in the Electronics Industry. After writing 17 (and more) Marketing Minute columns and working with electronics companies, I realized I was repeatedly answering similar marketing questions. Rather than leaving those lessons scattered across a year's worth of columns, I brought them together into one practical guide.
In my years of marketing in the electronics industry, the questions I’ve encountered all center around similar challenges:
- How do we get engineers to notice us?
- How can we get our technical content to generate leads?
- We're investing in marketing. How can we make every dollar work harder?
Those challenges led me to an important realization: Most companies know what they want marketing to accomplish; they just need a roadmap for getting there.
One company I worked with was making a meaningful investment in advertising to increase market visibility. They had excellent technical content, yet it appeared inconsistently and wasn't connected to their advertising or broader marketing efforts. By aligning educational articles, newsletters, social media, thought leadership, and advertising into a coordinated strategy, every marketing activity reinforced the others. As a result, prospects were more familiar with the company, recognized its expertise, and entered sales conversations with greater confidence.
Another company believed its engineers weren't marketers, and that wasn’t true. Their engineers were their greatest marketing asset. We simply helped transform their expertise into articles, interviews, webinars, and educational resources that complemented the company's broader marketing initiatives. Instead of sounding promotional, they demonstrated the technical knowledge their customers already valued, and that credibility made every marketing effort more effective.
Those experiences, along with many others, became the impetus for writing Marketing in 17 Minutes. Throughout the book, I argue that successful marketing in the electronics industry isn't about relying on a single tactic. Advertising, content marketing, public relations, email, events, and social media each play an important role. The greatest results come when those efforts work together through a consistent, integrated strategy that builds trust, strengthens brand recognition, and supports long-term growth.

- Create technical content that earns trust
