Public Display Unit Shipments and Revenue on the Rebound
May 6, 2016 | IHSEstimated reading time: 2 minutes

Overall public display shipments and revenue will rebound in 2016, as regional economies recover and more large projects are installed. In fact, unit shipments of public displays are expected to grow 9.3 percent year over year, reaching approximately 3 million units in 2016, as revenue increases 15.3 percent. Total public display revenue will rise $1 billion per year to reach $9.7 billion in 2020. The average selling price (ASP) of a public display will increase from $1,826 in 2015 to $1,926 in 2016, according to IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS),the leading global source of critical information and insight.
“To succeed in the global public displays marketplace, manufacturers need to focus their resources on products that have higher profit margins or, more precisely, products that generate more margin dollars,” said Sanju Khatri, director of digital signage and professional displays for IHS Technology. “Panel makers will therefore continue to shift production to displays with larger sizes, higher resolutions, higher brightness levels and thinner bezels, because they carry price premiums in the market.”
Shipments of 55-inch LCD displays reached 18.4 percent of the market in 2015, but that share will reach it's highest point of 28 percent in 2017, before declining to 21 percent in 2020, based on the latest information from the IHS Digital Signage & Professional Displays Market Analysis report. Shipments of 70-inch displays will more than double from 3.9 percent in 2015 to 8.9 percent in 2020. The 70- to 79-inch category will grow from 2.6 percent in 2013 to 11.8 percent. Unit shipments of ultra-high definition (UHD) LCD public displays made up just 1.4 percent of total shipments in the fourth quarter of 2015; however, the share of UHD shipments is forecast to increase to 12.1 percent in 2020.
Public Display TVs
Public display TVs, which recorded 100,000 units shipped in 2015, are expected to grow at an 11 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) through 2020, topping 167,000 units. Public display TVs are all-in-one digital signage solutions, including displays with media players and digital signage software. Shipments of public display TVs fluctuate between 3 percent and 5 percent of the market, but revenue from public display sales comprised just 1.2 percent of the overall public display market in 2015, because they have a far lower average price than commercial public displays. By 2017, revenue from public display TVs will reach 1.3 percent and will stay at this level through 2020. IHS also captures regular consumer TVs sold into the digital signage and professional displays market, however, shipment from these products are not included here.
Public displays will be discussed in the coming SID Display Week 2016 Business Track, which is co-organized by IHS and the Society for Information Display. For more information, visit SID Display Week.
