Our expert contributors discuss the advent of mechatronics in PCB design, the challenges and opportunities this creates for circuit board designers, and the benefits—to the employee and the company—of becoming a mechatronics engineer.
Creating a Culture of Collaboration
PCB designers could learn quite a bit from NASA and the private companies that develop spacecraft: Every one of these vehicles is a testament to the value of collaboration among disparate stakeholders. Without a collaborative culture, the rocket might never get off the ground.
Breaking High-speed Material Constraints
Do you need specialty materials for your high-speed designs? Maybe not. Improvements in resins mean designers of high-speed boards can sometimes use traditional laminate systems. Learn more in this issue.

Numerical Innovations Releases FAB 3000 V8
October 26, 2018 | Numerical InnovationsEstimated reading time: 2 minutes
Numerical Innovations (NI) today announced its official release of FAB 3000 Version 8. FAB 3000 is a a full-featured CAM software package targeted for anyone who would like to have high-end CAM software to run advanced DRC/DFM verifications, generate component centroids, create SMT stencil pads, panelize PCBs, and perform many other useful features.
The software allows users to find all hidden manufacturing violations inside Gerber data before sending out to manufacturing. It offers DRC/DFM bare-board analysis tools to promptly check Gerber designs for all potential manufacturing problems. It will import/export: Gerber, DXF, DWG, PDF, Postscript, STL, STEP, GDSII, BOM, and several other formats, including ODB++ and IPC-2581.
“FAB 3000 has all the power of those other CAM tools costing thousands of dollars for a fraction of the price,” states Simon Garrison founder of Numerical Innovations. “We are especially excited about the new ‘hands-free’ DFM and DFA Analysis. It is by far the easiest way to concurrently verify your PCB designs for manufacturing. There is absolutely no experience needed to produce professional DFM and DFA reports in seconds,” mentions Garrison.
FAB 3000 is for designers of PCBs, microwave and RF circuits, chemically milled parts and optical components, as well as photomask manufacturers.
Below is list of only a few of the updates on the new V8 of FAB 3000:
- Faster DFM checks—up to 20X faster than Version 7 (by using advanced CPU optimization).
- Python and Perl API's for automation/script building.
- A full stackup visualizer.
- A Universal Stackup converter for both rigid and flex PCBs.
- Improved PCB panelizer.
- Improved user interface.
- Workspace file sharing.
- 64-bit Linux release that supports Kernel 3.10.x.
- PDF reports are easier to read and include more helpful information.
- ODB++ and IPC-2581 Import speed has been drastically improved.]
Many Fortune 500 companies trust FAB 3000 for their critical designs, including Apple, Google, Microsoft, Intel, and AMD, to name a few.
