IPC Excellence in Education Award: Zenaida Valianu

This award is given to individuals who have made significant contributions and demonstrated leadership in workforce development while building a culture of continuous learning within their organization and across the electronics industry.
Zenaida Valianu is the training manager at IPC who brings more than 25 years of expertise in standards and training development to her role. She has revolutionized IPC certification training programs by significantly enhancing their content with comprehensive curricula and engaging materials. She has also been instrumental in developing essential workforce training courses and contributing to various other initiatives.
Nolan Johnson: Zenaida, congratulations on receiving this award. What work have you done to earn this honor?
Zenaida Valianu: I’m working on transforming the training programs for IPC certifications, which are crucial in the electronics industry. I took a hands-on approach to revamp the curricula for key certifications like IPC-A-600, IPC-6012, IPC-A-610, IPC-7711/7721, J-STD-001, and IPC/WHMA-620, including specialized programs for Space and Military applications. This overhaul ensured the programs were up-to-date and set new industry benchmarks.
My focus was not only on updating the content but also on making it comprehensive, engaging, and effective for learners. I incorporated videos, visuals, and interactive elements into the training materials, making the courses more dynamic. I also created detailed Instructor and Lab Guides, Reviews, and training support materials to enhance the learning experience for operators, technicians, and engineers. These resources gave trainers the necessary tools to deliver successful training courses.
Johnson: That sounds significant. Was there anything else you were working on?
Valianu: Another significant contribution was working closely with the IPC Education team to develop workforce training programs focused on areas like electronic assembly, wire harness assembly, hand soldering, and inspection for electronic assemblies. These courses were tailored to align with industry standards and to adapt to the evolving needs of a competitive workforce.
Additionally, I play a role in developing IPC Member Benefit courses that equip workers with the knowledge to address industry challenges, including electrostatic discharge (ESD) awareness and prevention, adhering to safety protocols, and best practices to mitigate foreign object debris (FOD) in the electronics manufacturing environment.
Through these efforts, we streamlined and improved the training process, making it more efficient and impactful while equipping workers with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the electronics industry.
Johnson: How have you seen these initiatives affect the lives of people in our industry?
Valianu: The outcome has been deeply rewarding. Our training programs have transformed the careers of many individuals, helping them advance in their roles, take on new responsibilities, and make more meaningful contributions to their organizations. These programs provide learners with the knowledge and confidence to thrive, and it’s truly inspiring to see their professional growth. By enhancing individual expertise, we not only uplift organizations but also contribute to the progress of the industry as a whole.
Johnson: Tell me about IPC’s mission and goals in education.
Valianu: IPC’s mission is to advance the electronics industry through education, innovation, and high standards. Workforce development is at the heart of this mission. We are committed to providing professionals with the training they need to succeed in an ever-evolving field.
My role at IPC is to ensure our certification and training programs align with the latest industry developments while maintaining our organization's integrity and high standards. Our educational initiatives aim to help individuals gain the skills they need to thrive in their careers and support the industry's long-term success.
Johnson: Who inspires you to do what you do?
Valianu: I find inspiration from many places, but the IPC community of professionals is one of the most impactful sources. Collaborating with dedicated colleagues, experts, and passionate volunteers inspires me to push for improved education and training in our field. The shared commitment to excellence and the desire to help others grow motivates me every day. Outside the industry, I am inspired by educators devoted to helping people reach their full potential. Seeing individuals discover and unlock their abilities drives me to contribute to their success.
Johnson: Good educators never stop learning. What have you learned recently that has changed how you do this work?
Valianu: I have learned the value of micro-learning and active learning strategies in professional education. As technology evolves quickly, professionals need flexible, on-demand learning to stay updated. Creating shorter, more targeted learning modules with interactive content makes learning more engaging and effective, allowing individuals to learn at their own pace while gaining hands-on experience.
I have also realized that active learning—through methods like real-time problem-solving, simulations, and instant feedback—boosts engagement and retention. This shift has made our courses more immersive and aligned with the fast-paced nature of the electronics industry, helping learners better understand and apply complex information.
Johnson: What’s exciting to you about this industry right now?
Valianu: The electronics industry is fascinating because it is evolving rapidly, driven by advancements in AI, IoT, and automation. The demand for smarter, more connected devices is unprecedentedly pushing innovation. Integrating electronics in healthcare, automotive (especially with electric and autonomous vehicles), and space exploration opens many possibilities.
Another exciting development is the growing emphasis on sustainability and energy efficiency. Manufacturers prioritize creating greener, more reliable, and energy-efficient products. The industry's focus on delivering high-performance, dependable electronics, advanced components, and manufacturing capabilities is transforming product design. This shift drives scalable production, more precise engineering, and faster time-to-market.
The growing attention on workforce development through robust training programs is essential to ensure a skilled labor force that can keep pace with these innovations. With this emphasis, the future of the electronics industry is exceptionally promising, offering countless opportunities to influence everyday electronics and groundbreaking technologies that will define the future.
