Beyond the Rulebook
What happens when the rule book is no longer useful, or worse, was never written in the first place? In today’s fast-moving electronics landscape, we’re increasingly asked to design and build what has no precedent, no proven path, and no tidy checklist to follow. This is where “Design for Invention” begins.
March Madness
From the growing role of AI in design tools to the challenge of managing cumulative tolerances, these articles in this issue examine the technical details, design choices, and manufacturing considerations that determine whether a board works as intended.

Proteus Users Can Access EMA's Ultra Librarian 14 Million-Part Database
June 28, 2018 | EMA Design AutomationEstimated reading time: 2 minutes
EMA Design Automation announced the availability of Ultra Librarian symbols, footprints, and 3D models for PCB designers using the Labcenter Electronics Proteus Design Suite. “Adding Ultra Librarian support for Proteus users means a whole new set of additional designers can save valuable design time by downloading verified library content rather than creating it from scratch,” said Manny Marcano, president and CEO of EMA. “This gets us one step closer to our goal of providing the ‘Gold Standard’ of PCB content for all electronics designers.”
The Proteus Design Suite is a complete EDA software solution for professional PCB design, comprising schematic capture, microcontroller simulation, and PCB layout. With this latest update to Ultra Librarian, Proteus users will be able to export symbols and footprints in the Proteus format from UltraLibrarian.com or the Ultra Librarian desktop software. Coinciding with the Ultra Librarian update, Labcenter is releasing Proteus version 8.8 that includes updates to their model import capability. In this new version, models are checked for compatibility with Proteus during import with the results shown on the import log. Also, large schematic parts can be split into multiple elements during the Proteus import process, and pins can also be rearranged in different positions around the component body.
“Our Proteus users often need the symbols, footprints, and 3D models for the constant flow of new silicon devices,” said Iain Cliffe, executive director at Labcenter Electronics Ltd. “Ultra Librarian’s rapid generation of library content should satisfy our users’ needs and also provide them with access to a huge repository of high quality CAD models.”
