Material Witness: Thermal Oxidation of Materials, Part I
While you chew on this information, more work, including chemical analysis of aged versus unaged samples is going on, and as we start to fill in the black holes in my Universal Theory of Gravitation and Oxidation of Polymers (Einstein, eat your heart out!) we will be back with additional information. The point here is of course that most PWB materials are not tested and evaluated in this manner as a routine part of product development or qualification and, while this may not be breaking totally new ground, it is a case in which the data sheets may not tell the whole story. Clearly, not all resin systems perform the same under all conditions or designs.Be sure to test and evaluate when choosing materials so you can be sure they will perform in the working environment you choose, rather than just by the "standard" tests reflected in the published data. We will never know everything, but maybe recognition of the issues involved in various material properties will help us to make more informed decisions.
That's the Material Witness for now. See you again soon.
